Meeting with local Lib Dem candidate

I spent a convivial hour or so in the company of Gerald Francis, a Lib Dem WAG candidate here in South Wales West.

We discussed a range of issues and topics including wind farms, dog mess, coalitions and election strategies.

I will report back in more detail at the meeting next week.

Agenda items ASAP please.

The campaign against fracking in the Vale is certainly getting organised. They have set up a good looking website and acknowledge our support prominently:

I will be meeting up with the organisers as soon as possible. Let me know if you would like to come along. Andy.

Robin Hood Tax – how the revenue could be spent

This year British Bankers are predicted to take home £7bn in bonuses. At the same time people around the world are feeling the impacts of a financial crisis they did nothing to cause.

Does that sound fair to you?

It is clear that banks could afford to pay more in tax. Use the slider on the link below to see how the money could be better used to tackle climate change, and help people in the UK and around the world

FRACKING – short term profit against long term costs

A geological engineering professor whose specialty is rock mechanics and hydrogeology says hydraulic fracturing (fracking) to free natural gas from rock formations will cause “irreversible harm” lasting thousands of years.

And the gas companies will be long gone, leaving behind costly remediation, Marc Durand said in an interview, suggesting the gas producers should be forced to establish a reserve fund.

“The billions required would be much more than all the profits beckoning now,” said the retired Université du Québec à Montréal professor.

YES wins the day – now onwards and upwards

The Welsh have voted Yes to give their national assembly direct powers. Before any nay-sayer points out that the turn out was only 35%, say this: History is made by the people who can be bothered to turn up.

Approach for help campaigning against fracking at Llandow

APPROACH March 3 at 7:13pm

Hi Andrew, I saw your name on a news story about the proposed Gas drilling in Llandow. I live in a nearby village, my parents farm the land on Llandow and we have 2 businesses on Llandow. As you can imagine, I am completely against the current planning application and want to do all I can to raise awareness. I have set up this page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Say-NO-to-Toxic-Gas-Drilling-in-the-Vale/185164998191522

Would you be interested in doing something together on this?

I am away at the moment, but will be back on Sunday. Got plans for a website, petition, flyers….. Protests if it comes to it.

Thanks for your time,
Louise

REPLY March 3 at 9:16pm

Hi Louise,
For sure, we will do all we can to help you fight this proposal. We have seen Centrica back out in Bridgend County (but not elsewhere as yet). Our resources are limited, but along with the Vale of Glamorgan Greens I am sure we can achieve something.

The proposal at Llandow is by a Bridgend company called Coastal Oil & Gas, so I am keen to get after them in particular.

We should meet up sometime next week.

Best wishes, Andy

Fracking application update – Good news!!

BRIDGEND GREEN PARTY PRESS RELEASE

IMPORTANT UPDATE

Centrica have withdrawn their applications for fracking sites near Llangeinor and Ogmore Vale.

It is uncertain as to why they have withdrawn their applications from these two sites only (1) – but Bridgend Greens are jubilant!

Centrica appear to be pursuing applications in these locations:
ABERNANT, BRYN-CAWS, CLYNE, MARGAM and PELENNA

There are many other applications in the pipeline across the whole South Wales Coalfield area, so there is still much work to be done.

Press release : Green Party emergency resolution on fracking

BRIDGEND GREEN PARTY PRESS RELEASE

EMERGENCY MOTION BACKS BRIGEND GREENS’ CALL FOR FRACKING MORATORIUM

In an emergency motion (1) passed by the party’s spring conference (on 28 Feb), the Greens are calling for more analysis of the effects of fracking before it is even considered for development in the UK (2).
Caroline Lucas MP, leader of the Green Party, said after the motion passed that she was very worried about the potentially disastrous consequences of fracking to peoples health and the environment. She went on to say that it would be entirely foolish to allow a potentially dangerous form of extraction to be developed in the UK without further studies being carried out. The motion at conference is the culmination of vociferous campaigning by Blackpool and Fylde Green Party, in England, and Bridgend and Swansea Green Parties in Wales, who have been fighting plans to bring fracking to Britain. (3)

James Abbott, Green Party spokesperson for Science and Technology, pointed out that fracking has consequences beyond its impact on local communities: As well as the local impacts, including potential groundwater contamination, shale gas exploration is part of the ever more desperate hunt for fossil fuels as conventional supplies are set to fail to meet demand.

Andy Chyba, Chair of Bridgend Greens and former geology teacher says: “There is ample evidence that the way fracking is done today is technically unsound and potentially catastrophic in terms of environmental damage and human health. There is also evidence that local planning authorities are way out of their depth in dealing with these proposals. For example, the level of consultation and the questions asked by Bridgend County Borough Council, about the proposals near Llangeinor and Ogmore Vale, appear wholly inadequate. For this reason, I have requested that these applications be called in by the Welsh Assembly Government for proper scrutiny.”

“This issue also underlines why the people of South Wales need Green Party representation in the Welsh Assembly. People should make their second regional list vote count for something in May and vote Green Party. Greens have made a worthwhile impact wherever they have been elected (4). It is time for Wales to gain the benefits of Green Party perspectives on social and environmental issues.”

Notes

(1) Text of the emergency motion:

‘The oil and gas industry is seeking to exploit UKonshore gas reserves trapped in shale rock and coal beds requiring environmentally damaging and risky techniques, including hydraulic fracturing (fracking). This conference condemns the coalition government for refusing to impose a ban, demanded by environmental groups, on shale gas, and on the related coal bed methane extraction industry, at least until the results of studies here and in the US have been considered.

This conference expresses concern at the historic first UK use of this technology at a site of an important ground water aquifer and notes that over 80 further applications have been applied for around the UK.’

Conference instructs GPEX to publicise the issues to enable the Green Party at every level to take a firm line to protect communities, drinking water and the environment.

(2) The recently released film Gasland highlights the many negative effects of fracking in the USA.

Daily Star is sitting up and taking notice

Hi team, please note this coverage from conference because its a powerful message…

In policy terms, we are the real opposition…

…challenging the cosy consensus of the big three parties…

…we speak for all those people, especially former Labour and Lib Dem supporters, who want policies that none of the big three are offering.
